Brief of project

Originally founded in 1927, Commonweal School is based in Swindon, Wiltshire and was originally designed for around 400 pupils. Over the years areas of the school have been developed to accommodate more students, including a Sixth Form. Sandymount Construction Limited was appointed as Principal Contractor for the development of the new music block, working closely with Surveyors; Kenneth & Edwards Limited.

This was a live site and the new Music Block was to replace re-purposed work sheds which had been in use for over 30 years. Nominated two years in a row for the Local Authority Building Control ‘Best Educational Building’ Award, this development is a contemporary design using modern materials and systems including industry leading aluminium windows, self-coloured render as well as secure rooms with keypad entry and floating floors for soundproofing.

Key Features

  • Contemporary design with modern materials and systems
  • Industry leading aluminium doors and windows
  • Secure rooms with keypad entry
  • Floating floors for soundproofing

Biggest challenge

Working on a live site with students and staff along with navigating the original buildings limited the option of machinery & equipment normally used for a project of this size. Sandymount developed a safe, effective way to transport materials, using a trolley specifically designed for the site.
